Shepherding Team

The Shepherding Team is a group of women and men who are the primary lay leaders of our church. This group of leaders fulfills many of the traditional biblical roles assigned to elders. The Shepherding Team is the authoritative decision-making body for all matters pertaining to our church. Of course this team often delegates certain authority to the staff, to lay volunteers, or to committees of the board. But the ultimate locus of authority (which is under Christ) is the Shepherding Team. This fact is made clear in the church's bylaws, which state that the board has the power to make policy, hire pastors and other staff, approve membership, exercise church discipline, oversee the preaching of the word, and manage the properties, activities, and affairs of the church. In its policymaking capacity, the Shepherding Team develops and maintains the organizational structure of the church. In this capacity, the board determines the job responsibilities of the staff, makes personnel decisions, and provides ultimate oversight of all ministry at the church (often by delegating this oversight to staff and/or lay ministry teams).

These leaders are put in place through a selection process in which the congregation is heavily involved. The selection process involves nominations from the congregation, consideration of these nominations by a committee composed a combination of board members and other members of the congregation, nomination of a slate of candidates by the committee, and a vote by the congregation on the slate of candidates. These elected leaders of the church set church policies with the goal of honoring Christ, maintaining unity in the body, and helping our church achieve its stated mission – to seek the peace of the city.
